Granulate Production

At the Fraunhofer IAP a new process for the production of granulate from Rayon tire yarn and polypropylene for injection molding applications has been developed.

The production of injection moldable granulate at the Fraunhofer IAP incorporates two steps. First, the cellulosic continuous fibers are coated with the polymer matrix melted in the extruder (see figure). After cooling, the produced thread it is cut on a laboratory granulator. The received granulate is dried. In a second processing step the compounds are homogenized on the same twin-screw extruder. Thus, the injection moldable granulate is obtained after granulation and drying.
